2022 is going to be a banner year for VR gaming. While titles like Half-Life: Alyx and Hitman 3 VR are already flying the flag for the immersive world of virtual reality, there are still lots more to come.
The advent of PSVR 2 will provide even more opportunities for you to get up close and personal with the worlds of your favorite gaming properties, and rumored offerings from Apple and Microsoft could change the landscape even further.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at the best upcoming VR games arriving this year, provided by Gamerbolt.com.
1. Horizon: Call of the Mountain (PSVR)
Unfortunately, we don’t know whether or not Horizon: Call of the Mountain will actually launch in 2022, but we’re extremely hopeful that it will. Announced in February, Call of the Mountain will take us further into the world of the Horizon franchise and will focus on a different protagonist.
We don’t have too many other details yet; you’ll be able to meet Aloy and other characters you’re familiar with, but the gameplay is still shrouded in mystery. Nevertheless, we’re extremely excited about this one.
2. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR (Meta Quest 2)
At the time of writing, GTA: San Andreas VR has only been confirmed for the Meta Quest 2 platform, so if you were hoping to play it on PSVR, you might be out of luck.
Still, if you do happen to have a Meta Quest 2, this one should be high on your list. CJ’s adventures in the well-realized city of Los Santos are still just as exciting as they were back in 2004, and although the visuals may have aged somewhat poorly, getting to run over pedestrians while “Them Bones” plays in the background certainly hasn’t aged at all.
3. Zenith: The Last City (PC, PSVR)
We’re almost amazed that nobody has tried something on the scale of Zenith already. It’s an anime-inspired VR MMO coming to PC and PlayStation VR sometime this year, inspired by World of Warcraft, FFXIV, and Black Desert Online.
If there’s one thing MMOs do almost better than any other genre, it’s immersive worldbuilding, and Zenith promises to put you on the ground level of a classic MMO experience.
It’s already out in Early Access, but we’re hoping for a full release this year.
4. Assassin’s Creed VR and Splinter Cell VR
Unusually, we have pretty much no information about either Assassin’s Creed VR or Splinter Cell VR.
However, both franchises are exciting propositions for the world of virtual reality; imagine getting to sneak around a fully-realized Rome as Ezio, for example, or taking on one of Sam Fisher’s high-tech missions from your favorite VR headset.
Hopefully, we’ll get more information about both of these projects as 2022 rolls on, and also hopefully, Ubisoft isn’t mismanaging these projects as horribly as it’s mismanaging its work culture.
5. Among Us VR (PC, PSVR)
There was a moment in 2022 when everyone became completely obsessed with the social deduction game Among Us. The pandemic did funny things to our brains, but it turns out Among Us was genuinely brilliant, so a VR version of the game makes a lot of sense.
This one will be a first-person 3D experience in which you’ll need to complete a series of tasks around the iconic ship, all while watching for crewmates that are actually alien traitors in disguise.
6. Vertigo 2 (PC)
We’re banking on 2022 being the year that Vertigo 2 finally sees a release. The game has been in development for some time, but with new gameplay trickling through every so often – including a new gameplay trailer in December 2021 – we’re hopeful that this promising, ambitious game finally sees the light of day this year.
If it does, it’ll mix action-packed gameplay with branching narrative decision-making and a beautiful retro sci-fi aesthetic.
7. Moss: Book II (PSVR)
A sequel to the fan-favorite Moss, Book II launches sometime in 2022 for PSVR. Presumably, it’ll also be compatible with PSVR 2, so you should be able to enjoy this one for a long time to come.
Much like the original Moss, the sequel will present lots of traps, puzzles, and enemies for the player to overcome, and will play in a similar Zelda-esque way. If you loved the first Moss, then it’s likely you’ll adore this one too, so let’s hope we get a release date soon.
8. Cities: VR (Meta Quest 2)
If you love Cities: Skylines, then you’ll be thrilled to know that a port for the Meta Quest 2 device is on its way. Cities: VR promises to let you be the mayor in an all-new immersive way, zooming in on your cities and wandering their streets like you were a citizen.
Of course, it’ll also come with all the requisite management gameplay; you’ll be able to oversee your city as it grows, deciding where to put important landmarks, how to allocate budget, and how to deal with problems as they arise.
9. Tentacular (PC)
Did you enjoy Octodad: Dadliest Catch? If you did, then it looks like you’re going to love Tentacular, a physics-based VR puzzler where you play as a giant tentacle monster trying to help the citizens of an adorably cartoony city.
You must assist in the city’s construction, help its citizens when they get into trouble, and discover who you really are and where you came from.
There’s also a creative mode if you just want to experience life as a tentacle monster (and who doesn’t?).
10. Ziggy’s Cosmic Adventures (PC)
Last but certainly not least, we have Ziggy’s Cosmic Adventures, which promises to transpose the rather nerdy action of Star Trek: Bridge Crew (no judgment!) to a more cartoony, arcadey setting.
You’ll need to manage the systems of your ship as you flee from the Empire, having just stolen an adorable little creature from their clutches.
Battle enemy ships, dodge space debris and experience a branching narrative in what looks to be a galactically fun little space sim.
